Spring 2017 Volleyball
Session Dates: March 13 – June 18, 2017
The Darien YMCA Sports Department will once again be offering our Youth Volleyball program this Spring.
The Senior program will be offered to girls in grades 5-8. The Junior program will be offered to girls in grades 3&4. The coaches and their staff will teach the players the fundamental aspects of the sport through creative drills and multiple team competitions as well as scrimmages. Players will be split into two groups for focused development. These groups will change from week to week to strengthen team dynamics.
This class is for both beginners and the experienced. This level will emphasize the basic fundamental skills of volleyball. Athletes will learn how to pass, set, spike, dig, and serve. Progressive drills and mini-games will be used to help give athletes a better understanding of volleyball. This level will help prepare athletes planning to play competitively at the high school level and for those who just want to learn the sport. All activities will focus on developing confidence and skill while promoting enjoyment of the sport.
Our senior program will be led by Erin McHugh. Erin played volleyball locally at Stamford High School, where she was voted team captain, All-FCIAC, and All-State. She went on to play at Division I Long Island University, again being voted team captain and All-NEC. Erin still continues to play competitively in multiple adult leagues.
Program runs on Monday & Wednesday nights from 6:00-7:30 at the Darien YMCA. Begins March 13th and ends May 15. No class on April 10, 12 or 17.
Cost: Members $275, Non-members $375
Our Junior program will be led by Cris Leone. Cris was recruited to play Division I volleyball at Georgia Tech. A four-year starter at GT, Cris broke many school records and earned many individual honors in her career. Most notably, she was a 4-time All-ACC honoree, was inducted into the Georgia Tech Athletic Hall of Fame and was also named to the Atlantic Coast Conference’s 50th Anniversary Women’s Volleyball team– recognizing the top 5 women who played the sport in the 50 year history of the conference. Cris finished her career at Georgia Tech leading the team to a ranking of 17th in the country and a first ever ACC championship of any women’s sport at the school, while also holding the volleyball record for most kills and kills-per-game in the history of the program. Cris currently resides in Darien with her husband and four children.
